LETTERS "NOT RECEIVED."
. Two interesting items appear in the report, of the last meeting of the Waitemata Count? Council The iirst is a decision that two letteis be not received," one of whiM. anT a i? roW J? rate P a 3 rer with a grieJ" ance. Now there is nothing unusual V. ratepayer of the Waitemata County Council havmg a grievance; in fact the only S payers that I can imagine being without ™ would be those resident in Te Atatu. From the published reports of the letters in questS +i I+l S6e . er . e 13 in ei ther of them that the respective riding members can take exception to. There is usually keen competU tion for membership of local bodies. Thorn is no compulsion. Some plead almost with tears m their eyes (a local phrase) for the job, yet after election they lose sight of tfca fact that after all they J ml y Sr^ ?hJ\°h 6 - W i + m • . ey asked to "Present and that their duty as to serve the ratepayers and that the maintenance of their own imaginary dignityis not the sole or first duty of°office Mr. O Halloran is reported as saying "he would' be prepared to give a full explanation of the matters raised, but under the circumstances he was not prepared to do this." Somewhat confused phraseology and not the correct attitude for a public representative to adopt If any member of the council feels that he is unable to give the ratepayers whom he renresents proper service he has the privilege of resigning The second item of interest is that at this self-same meeting the members of the | council took umbrage at some action on the 'part of the member for Auckland Suburbs, Apparently tliey considered ■ that their dignity or importance had. not received proper recogni« tion at the hands of the member for the district and decided to send him a letter on the subject. Not a "Your-subj'ects-humbly-plead" sort \l etter > kuk " a strong letter of protest to Mr. Mason objecting to his action in not first consulting the council." How dare he! I wonder if Mr. Mason will copy the example set linn by the council and mark "the strongly worded protest" "not received." Some local bodies have no sense of humour. GLEN EDEUi
