NORTH SHORE BOROUGHS.

SUGGESTED AMALGAMATION

i j :; | TAKAPUNA COUNCIL

DISCUSSION.

"GET A MOVE OX," SAYS MR.

GUINIVEN.

The question of amalgamation between the four North Shore boroughs "was raised at last night's meeting of the Takapuna Borough Council, when Mr. J. Guiniven suggested that a conference of borough representatives should bo called. "T.lie existing form of local government," he said, "is obsolete and extravagant." Hitherto the Takapuna Council had been the home of conservatism and inaction, and the time had arrived when a definite move should be made toward amalgamation, which would make for economy and efficiency. Whenever communities had pooled iheir interests •benefits had resulted to all. There had never been a failure. The Mayor (Mr. J. W. Williamson): What about federation in Australia? Mr.. Guiniven: I can see you're opposed to the idea. You must be an Irishman. You're "agin the Government." (Laughter.) However, let us stick to New Zealand. We ought to get,out of this old-fashioned groove and get a move on. Mr. Bryce Hart: If there was only one council you would probably not be on it. (Laughter.) Mr. Guiniven: That's a matter of opinion. Mr. J. W. Hayden, the Deputy-Mayor, said he was whole-heartedly in favour of the idea of amalgamation between Devonport and Takapuna. but k°> considered there was too great an area of waste land between these boroughs 'and the other two (Birkenhead and Northcote) for a complete amalgamation to be feasible. The Mayor pointed out that there was also land belonging to the Waitemata County Council which might prove a bar 'to amalgamation. Mr. Guiniven moved and Mr. Hayden seconded that representatives of the other, boroughs should be invited to a conference on the subject. This was carried without opposing votes being cast. • 1
