BUILDER FINED. WORK DONE WITHOUT PERMIT. A builder named S. L. Wallath was charged before Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., to-day with breaches of the building regulations. The charges were: Constructing a landing and stairway to a building without a permit; adding a sausage room without a permit; failing to provide the number of piers and beams specified; and building a landing and stairway without a permit. Mr. Craig appeared for Inspector Murray, and Mr. Jacobsen for the defendant, who pleaded guilty. Mr. Jacobsen explained that Mr. Wallath was a young man about 2(3 years of age, and had contracts in hand at the present time totalling about £00,000. He pointed out to the building inspector what he proposed to do, and was of the opinion that he could then go on with the work. In respect to not providing all the piers specified, Mr. Jacobsen said steel had been used in another part, which an expert had, in a letter sent to the council, stated rendered the place stronger than if the piers were there. Mr. Wallath had no intention of breaking the regulations, and was quite prepared to rectify anything to the satisfaction of the inspector. Mr. Craig said unfortunately when the letter was forwarded to the council about the piers the work had already been done. Mr. Wilson said the defendant had taken upon himself more work than he probably could properly attend to. As breaches had been committed he would be fined £1 and costs on each of the five charges.
