AVONDALE RACING REVIEWED.
GERALDINE RACING CLUB ANNUAL MEETING, SEPT. 26 AND 27. GOOD LIST OF ACCEPTANCES, TO-MORROW'S FIELDS REVIEWED. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, this clay. The Geraldine Racing Club's meeting will engage attention this week. It will lie commenced to-inorrow (Thursday) and concluded on Friday. It is one of the most popular country fixtures in the province, and its one meeting each season never fails to attract strong support from owners and the public. Even when other clubs throughout the Dominion were experiencing hard times the Geraldine meetings were very successful,' the result being that the club now* occupies a strong position. The prospects for this week's meeting are exceptionally bright. The fields are large and of excellent quality, a number of good horses being booked for their first engagements of the new season, while the presence of half-a-dozen New Zealand Cup candidates will add to the interest in the chief event. First Hurdles. The top weight Beauty Light won at the Otago Hunt Club's meeting, and on that form he is entitled to respect in a moderate field. Heisler is a speedy customer,-though not a good stayer. He should be equal to running out the distance. His stable mate Rangiawhio has been galloping well lately. Pangolin and Waihemo are a pair of newcomers. The former has shown considerable promise in his schooling, and he may offer most opposition to Beauty Light and Heisler. ' Ohapi Hack. Bellbird showed smart form at Ashburton last Saturday, when she was third to Mepiisant and Desert Song, and she only has to repeat that running to be dangerous. Airplane can. go fast, while Briarthorn and Huntley are a pair of smart gallopers. Handsome and Hind —two Trenthani candidates — are reported to be useful, but they have 110 public form to commend them. Twang has been galloping well 011 the Riccarton > tracks, and lie should soon be ready to run prominently in a race. Those lower down the list include one or two improving horses, but Bellbird and Huntley read best. Geraldine Cup. There are six New Zealand Cup candidates in the field, and the race will'gain some importance from their presence. The Trenthani pair. Black Mint and Royal Game have been racing through the winter, and they will be more forward than some of their rivals'. Taboo is another who should be a fit horse. Money Mine has had 110 racing since June, but he was at the top of his form then. Prickles ran a good race at Ashbur.ol1 —if she repeats that form she will be hard to beat. The Black Mint- 1 Royal Game bracket may provide the strongest opposition. Geraldine Trot. Most of the acceptors are on the limit, and they include a number of novices 0i whom very little is . known. Among them is Llewellyn, one of Mr. J. R. McKenzie's American importations, and he will attract a good deal of attention. ' Among the others Mac Locanda is a useful sort, but the unknown contingent may include some good ones. Squatters' Handicap. s Rapier has a big load, and though he _■ may find it difficult to concede so much * to some of the speedy gallopers lower ( down, his chance cannot be ignored, as he represents good class. He may, how ; < ever, require a race. Money Older has i been off the scene since Jast spring. He r has been galloping well lately, but he is 1 not ready to show his best over six a furlongs yet. At the same time his c great, speed will help him a long way. Aspiring is not at her best, but she mav \ improve quickly with a race. Stealth P was a winner at the Otago Hunt meeting and' should run well. Caterpillar * failed at Ashburton, but should do better next time out. Silver Coot is useful at his best. First Raid appeals strongly, as he is a very smart "sprinter. Arch Arrow is a likely sort. Bulolo—though a brilliant sprinter—is not' reliable. Stealth and'.'First 'Raid seeiii a likelv pair. ; Raukapuka Hack. Sea Raid won handsomely over a mile at Ashburton, and slie will require a lot of beating here, as she is very well and the distance will be no trouble. Glenrowan showed good hack form at the Grand National meeting, and is worth keeping in mind again. Amourette failed at Ashburton, but she is capable of something better. Mount Boa registered two useful performances in South Canterbury in July. They represent all his public form, and he is likely to improve. Those lower down do not appeal strongly. Sea Raid,. Glenrowan and Mount Boa seem most worthy of support. Orari Trot. As in the earlier trotting event the bulk of the field is made up of maidens, among them being 1 a number of young horses. The three-year-old Royal Silk is a likely sort, who may be hard to beat. . Of those .further back John Noble reads best. Belfield Handicap. Taboo, Royal Game and Prickles are engaged earlier in the day in the Geraldine Cup, but if reserved for this event any one of this trio would be dtingeious. Honeycomb is in <jood fettle at present, and he is just the sort to °" fc a solid mile. Mem bo will also find the distance to his liking, and.he showed last month that he was at his best. Narrative ran n good race behind Honeycomb at Riccarton last month, and he should be hard to .beat. Iloneyoml to beat!
