At the monthly meeting of the Birkdale Institute, Mrs. Hyde and Mrs. Wake man, of the Auckland Hospital Auxiliary, gave a demonstration on moccasin making. * * * * Mrs. C. Hanliam entertained members of the Avondale Croquet Club in the club's pavilion yesterday afternoon, when progressive "500" was played. Mrs. J. E.» Ellis secured the prize and Mrs. McConnell won a hidden number competition. » » * • A social evening was held in the Navy League rooms on Monday. An excellent programme was arranged by Miss Edna Thomas, the following •artists assisting: Misses Hope Aslier, Barbara Kerr, Lingard, Harrison, Nancy and Victory Kerr, Mrs. Lovell and Mrs. Harrison, ejftl Messrs. Raymond ' Reeve, W. Roberts, Hallahan, Ernest Snell, Stokes and W. Johnston. * .* • The first annual meeting of the South Auckland division of Girl Guides was held at Hamilton on Monday evening, when officers were elected as follows: President, Mrs. G. de Vere Chitty; vicepresidents, Mrs. J. R. Fdw, Mrs. H. Douglas and Mrs. H. Valder; executive, Mesdames W. Palmer, G. Euckland Shaw, , Lambert, H. Clarke, Rollo, P. D. Pinfold, Cobbe, and F. W. Luxford. * * * At the annual convention of the Auck- i land District Women's Christian Temper- - ance Union, held yesterday in the Methodist Hall, Onehunga, the president, Mrs. Lee-Cowie, asked Mrs. Kasper to accept from her a scrap album with covers made of koa wood from Honolulu, beautifully polished and bearing the Hawaii coat-of-arms in gold on one side and the following inscription inside: "To the beloved Jennie Lind of the W.C.T.U." Mrs. Kasper suitably replied. • • * • An enjoyable evening was held on Monday at Mrs. J. Rogers' residence, Bell Road, ' Remuera, with musical items, games and dances. Mrs. J. Rogers received her guests in black lace over black satin trimmed with clicrry velvet. Miss J. Rogers wore shaded rose georgette ■with lemon "shawl. Among the guests were: Miss E. Chambers, apple green georgette with embossed georgette; Miss W. Fraser, nink ring velvet; Miss N." coral pink embossed georgette with shawl to tone; K. The Hibernian Hall, Mangawliare, Dargaville, was the scene of a children's' fancy dress ball inaugurated by the Sodality of the Children of Mary. Mesdames W. Martin, A. Barlass and Miss F. Drummond acted as judges and awarded prizes as follow: Best dressed boy, D. Stanaway, Ben Hur; best dressed girl, Peggy Hughes, rambling rose; most original girl, Iris Clime, aviator; most original boy, Jack Anderson, fisherman. Tiny tots: Best dressed girl, Winifred Ball, Miss 1929; best dressed boy, Ray Easmussen, Romeo; most original girl, Faith Bennet, powder puff; most original boy, Lorin Peko, wolf. * * * «
The final weekly card evenings, under the auspices of the Avondale Cricket Club, was held at Mrs. Green's residence, Orchard Street, Avondale, when about forty guests were present. Through the medium of these weekly functions throughout the winter, the Cricket Club has benefited to the extent of about £40, and will commence the season with a good credit balance, thanks being due to the ladies who have conducted tbe evenings. Prizes for cards were won Iry Mrs. C. Westren and Mr. Newton; hidden number competitions by Mrs. P. Wood and Mr. A. Reid; consolation prizes, Miss Maisie Green and Master D. Green. At the conclusion of the card tournament dancing was indulged in.
A children's fancy dress ball was held in the Pakuranga Hall last evening, when ■ excellent music was played by the ' Hackensaek Five Orchestra. The winners of the first prizes were:—Miss Mary Kyd, as an early Victorian lady: Master Mervvn Pilkington, an 18th century gentleman; most, original, Miss E. Doel, a window and Master J. Hattaway, ' "Why Did I Kiss That .Girl." Consolation prizes' went to Miss J. Blundell, as an early Victorian lady and Master J. Blundell, a kitten. Others present were:—Misses Gwen Byers, gipsy; Julia Hattaway, 110 more strikes; Mabel Doel, community singing; M. Langdon, Heard's choc.; K. Thompson, Yale Blues; Amy McMurray, Ku Klux Klan; B. Williams, Mount Albert, on Saturday evening to bid the family farewell on their departure from Auckland. The rooms were gaily decorated. Dancing went witih a swing to music supplied by Mr. Jack Glover. Novelty competitions were won by Miss N. Newman, Miss E. Butterworth, Mr. Allan Bobertson and Mr. Albert Williams. During the ing the members of St. Margaret's Club paid a surprise visit, and the club's mascots, little Marjory Smith and Joan Weaver, presented Miss Althea Williams (president), with a set of F. W. Boreham's books and Miss Olive Williams (secretary) with a bouquet composed of flowers representing the club's colours. Mr. Allan Bobertson gave pianoforte selections. St. Jude's Church Hall, Avondale, "wui i a scene of gaiety last evening when I friends assembled at a kitchen evening in honour of Miss Lorna Morrish, whose wedding takes place on Saturday. The evening was given by three very old. friends, Mrs. J. E. Ellis, Miss Dot' Harris and Mrs. A. Shaw. For those who did not dance si game of progressive 500 was provided, and Mr. and Mrs. C. Westren were successful in capturing both prizes. Mrs. J. H. Rayner winning a consolation prize. A wedding guessing competition caused endless fun, Miss Maiee and Mr. Jack Shaw being triumphant. Excellent dance music was supplied 'by Mrs. H. Whale, Messrs. B. and K. Meikle and C. Steven. Amongst those who were present were Mrs. J. E. Ellis, black velvet; Mrs. A.
