" POLITICAL INFLUENCE." CANTERBURY CRITICISM. (By Telegraph.—Own CorresDondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. "It seems a case of getting into averse gear again," said Mr. F. W. reeman, president of the Canterbury utomobile Association, when discussing ie transport bill. "From reports, it is doubtful whether lie overhaul is going to be as good as lie present conditions," Mr. Freeman lid. "One of the most objectionable ;atures of the proposals was the placing f the Highways Board under the conrol of the Minister of Transport, and bus making' it subject to political ifluence. The board should be above uspicion." He did not think it a forward st<p hat the Minister should determine the mount to be expended from the funds f the board in the North and South slands. "Regarding the constitution of the oard," said Mr. Freeman, "it does not eem logical that the Counties Associaion executive should be asked to appoint wo members from the North and two rom the South Island, when the motorsts who provide the money are only o have one representative from each Bland, appointed on the recommendation f the Minister" Mr. Freeman said he regarded the pro>osal to abolish the exemption from icense fees as a good one, while the iroposed method of issuing licenses also ,-as an improvement.
