BUSINESS IRREGULAR. BANKS WEAK: COALS STRONG. A good volume of business was put through on the local Exchange yesterday afternoon, but this mornings call concluded without any additions naving been made to the list of completed sales. Features of latest trading are the comparative weakness of banks, and the continued strength of coals. A sale of Union Banks at £14-18/0 marks a fall of 2/ in the week, and quotations at this morning's call showed a slight reduction in offers for no less than five line 3 of bank scrip, namely Australian of Commerce, Commercial of Australian, English and Scottish, New South Wales, and New Zealand. Coals on the other hand are very strong. Pukemiros are quoted ex dividend, with buyers at £3 11/6, and the whole of the scrip in this section is in keen demand. Buyers have again come forward for Westport, offering £1 13/9. Howard Smith and Thames Theatre were both quoted ex div. this morning. Northern Steams are firm, with buyers at 14/9, and no sellers. Farmers' Fertilisers have eased with buyers back to £1 1/. New Zealand Refrigerating (con.), are easier with offers to sell at 6/7. An inquiry was received for S. R. Maxwell shares, the buyers offering 6/6 for the £1 shares. Gilt-edged stocks are in keen demand, but the only line offering is a parcel of SYs (1936) at £102.
