LUNATIC AT LARGE.

Exciting Struggle With Warder

On Beam Of Bridge.

MADMAN OVERCOME,

(United Service.)

NEW YORK, September 23

James Bennett, an ironworker, escaped from a ward for the mentally afflicted in the Manhattan Hospital and climbed on to the East River bridge. Reaching a narrow beam 135 ft above the river he resisted capture. Finally a patrolman named Saeger approached the man from behind and grappled with him. They fought for teu minutes when Bennett was subdued with an arm lock. The patrolman then lowered him with a rope to the river bank. Thousands of people watched the incident.
