LADIES' HOCKEY.
SENIOR AND JUNIOR EVENTS COMMENT ON THE PLAY. Last Saturday proved ideal for hocke; and although the grounds were slightl bumpy, they were in good order, an did much to make the games playe worth watching. Iα the senior grade, only one gain was played, Y.AV.C.A. meeting Wesle in the second round of the senior knock out championship, whilst in the junic grade two games in each section wer 2>layed off. In the senior grade game spectator were treated to a- very good exhibitio of fast, clean, open hockey, as playc by the Y.W.C.A. team, particular]; throughout the first half, when thi team appeared to be able to do jus what they wished with their opponents whose usual dash and team combina tion was conspicuous by its absence Y.W.C.A. scored three times during tin first half, Miss McLaiighlin netting twico and Miss .Waters once. Weslej failed to find the net at all. After half-time Wesley seemed tc waken up slightly, and as a, result Y.W. were unable to increase their goal total. Wesley secured the only goal scored in the second half, Miss Burton netting after a series of attacks on Y.W.'s goal. For Wesley Misses 11. Saunders and M. White were the outstanding players. It would be a difficult matter to single any one player out of the other team for commendation, every player giving of her best, and making the game an excellent example of what good team combination means. By winning this game Y.W.C.A. will meet the holders of the trophy (Somerville) next Saturday, and should they repeat their performance of Saturday, Somerville will be hard put to hold the Knock-out Championship Cup for another year. In the junior grade only one game proved exciting—the one between Mount Eden and Papatoetoe in the A section. At close of time neither team had scored, and this made it necessary for extra, time to be played, during which Mount Eden were unfortunate in having to concede Papatoetoe , a. "corner," so giving Papatoetoe the game. Papakura easily accounted for Y.W.C.A. in the other A section game, Y.W.C.A. being able to field only eight players. In the B section Wesley A defeated Technical B, and Somerville defeated Wesley B. Next Saturday, in the A section, Papakura will meet Papatoetoe in the second round of the championship, whilst in the B section a fresh draw will be taken out to arrange which of the teams —Manurewa, Somerville, Wesley A—will meet for the second round gamo in that section. Wesley seniors hope to visit Rotonm on October 5, and Y.W.C.A. hope to go up also on a Saturday a bit later in October. , There is a likelihood of a team from Bikurangi, also one from Waihi coming to Auckland for games at an early
