BOYCOTTED.

HINEMOA AT WESTPORT.

NON-TJNIONIST CREW.

ONE MEMBER ROUGHLY HANDLED.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

WESTPORT, Monday.

The steamer Hinemoa, which, waa recently purchased by D. W. McKay, Ltd., for the running of a South Island tourist service, arrived from Auckland on Saturday to load bunker coal prior to proceeding to Bluff. Owing to non-unionists being employed as firemen the waterside workers here have withheld the handling of the coal. A meeting of waterside workers to discuss the position will be held to-morrow morning. While the vessel has been in port one of the. firemen has had rough handling from men on other vessels. It is also alleged that a local resident took part in the rough handling, resulting in an arrest. ,

The departure of the Hincmoa from Auckland last week was delayed owing to a dispute between the Seamen's Union and the owners of the Hinemoa regarding the number of firemen to be carried and the rate of pay for seamen for the trip. The union's demand was that the steamer should carry six firemen and the rate of pay for the seamen should be £1 a day during the trip to Bluff. The agent for the vessel contended that the manning scale for a steamer of the Hinemoa's tonnage was only three firemen, and that| the rate of pay for the seamen should be only 25 per cent above the award rate, as is certified in the agreement between the Seamen's Union and the Shipowners' Federation. Owing to the Seamen's Union refusing to moderate its terms, the agents of the Hinemoa made arrangements to man tho vessel with volunteer labour, and she mailed last Wednesdav.
