CITY BURGLARIES.
TWO SUSPECTS ARRESTED.
CIVILIAN CALLS POLICE.
OTHER CHARGES TO BE BROUGHT.
STOLEN PROPERTY FOUXD.
As a result of the alertness of an employee of the New Zealand Dry Cleaning Company, who saw two men enter the premises on Saturday night, the Newton police arrested both men as they left the building.
Mr. Arthur Coubray, about 7.30 on Saturday evening, noticed the two men loitering near the side door of the building. His suspicions were aroused and ho kept a strict watch on the door from his house, which is nearly. Mr. Coubray saw the men return at 8 p.m. and ho immediately rushed-round to the Newton police station.
In a few minutes a detachment of seven constables left for Howe Street and completely surrounded the building. Two of the constables entered the front door, and, as soon as they did so, two men were observed making a hurried exit from the rear and climbing over a fence into a vacant section As the strangers were running across the open ground both were caught and handcuffed. Nothing was stolen from the premises. A long butcher's steel and a screwdriver were found in the vacant section, while one of the men arrested was found in possession of a lock from the side door.
Inquiries wero afterwards made by Detective T. Sneddon and Detective Kelly, who found that the two men, Leslie Robert Ashfield (26), a labourer, and Charles Giboin, alias Sibon, aged 24, a seaman, lived together in a room" in Hobson Street. When searched yesterday the voom was found to contain goods which have been identified as stolen property taken from various premises broken into during the past few weeks. A ham boiling in a pot, ready for dinner, was found to be one of two taken from tho Hydra Bacon Company's factory, College Hill, one night last week.
Several watches and other articles of jeweller}', alleged to have been stolen from Mr. Hendry's jeweller's shop in Remuera Road last Wednesday night an-.l a number of gramophone records, taken from tho West End Theatre, Ponsonby Road, were also found there. As the result of the arrests the police hope to clear up quite a number of burglaries which have occurred in the city and suburbs for some time past. Inspector Hollis, in charge of the central police district, said this morning that no less than seven charges of breaking and entering would bo brought against tho men arrested. "We have been looking for these two men for the past week," added the inspector. Accused Remanded. The two suspects appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court this morning,' when they were charged with breaking and entering the premises of tho New Zealand Dry Cleaning Company, Howe Street, with intent to commit a crime.
On the application of Chief Detective Hammond both were remanded in custody until September 30.
