A SHOE THIEF.

DRUNKENNESS AS EXCUSE. FIRST OFFENDER FINED. John Ryan, aged 30, a labourer, who was caught in the act of stealing a pair of shoes valued at £1 2/6 from the shop of E. E. Kitchener, Karangahape Road, on September 19, appeared at the Police Court for sentence this morning. The police said Ryan was a recent arrival from Australia. Nothing was previously known against him. His excuse for taking the shoes was that he was under the influence of liquor. Ryan, who said he was a first offender and asked for. a chance, was fined £5, or <14 days' imprisonment.
