STOLE BAG OF MONEY.
MAN IN HOTEL OFICE. PROBATION GRANTED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. A man who stole £34 from a city hotel was to-day granted probation for two years, and a charge against .a younger man who received £14 13/3 of the stolen money was dismissed. In addition, both names were suppressed^ "These two men were in the hotel office when a bag of money was brought in," said Detective-Sergeant Young. "The older man, when they were left alone, stole the money unknown to the other. When they were walking down the street he told the younger man that he had stolen the money and that he would share it. The younger man demurred, but finally accepted £14 13/3." "The probation officer has given me a searching report about the older man," said Mr. E. C. Levvey, S.M. "I find it difficult to see why he did this thing. He has had a sharp lesson now and-1 will admit him to probation for a period of two years. In the case of the younger man I am going to adopt the suggestion of counsel and the probation officer and take the extreme course of dismissing the charge against him."
