BOWLING.

ANOTHER VISITING DAY. OVERSEAS BOWLERS EXPECTED. i (By TEUXDLEK.) It was fortunate, for Auckland that the equinoctials spent their fury in Europe and America this year, enabling sports to proceed on Saturday under very pleasant conditions. The Nomads went across the harbour for the iirst time, although it seems contrary to their principles to go off terra firma, as they are supposed to be wandering over the land in their search for the green pastures that attract them. Four rinks were heartily welcomed at Takapuna by the club president, Mr. P. F. Coulthard, and he confirmed it at the tea adjournment, making special reference to the interest created by including a lady bowler from Australia in their party. He hoped they would again make a call at Takapuna next year. The welcome was acknowledged by Mr. J. Whitehouse, who spoke as one of the original four who constituted the Nomads.

Five rinks went to Devoiiport, where they found Mr. J. McGregor installed in the presidential chair, Rising to welcome them, he said how pleased lie was that during his term of office the club had the first opportunity of welcoming the "famous band of Nomads," of whom they had all heard so much lately. He pressed them to include Devonport again in their itinerary next year. Following the usual custom, a response was made by Mr. F. Stubbs, the skip who happened to have made the highest score at the adjournment, and he was supported by the Rev. A. Drake, his number three.

The organiser, Mr. J. J. Donnell, announced that next Saturday the final rally would take place at the Onehunga green, where there would be room for

all who eared to join in. As a feature of the afternoon, he is hoping to make up four rinks of club presidents. Club Tournaments. The final of the Dominion Road twoday tournament was played on Saturday, the winning skip being J. F. Benson, the club champion. However, the general play was disappointing, probably the best exhibition, particularly in the early part of the game, being given by Donald, Kamsey's lead, although he is quite a new player. The Ellerslie tournament began on Saturday, and proved a very enjoyable function. It will be continued next Saturday. The Canadian Visitors. The Dominion Council executive have revised the itinerary of the Canadian bowlers who are expected to arrive in Auckland on December 30, and all the alterations appear to be for the better. As was observed -when the first itinerary was announced, its chief fault was its excessive travelling, due largely to an attempt to bring them back to Auckland again, after taking them to Invercargill. Incidentally this entailed motoring during the whole of one day, between Gisborne and Eotorua, much too far to travel when on a pleasure tour. Opotiki saved the situation by sending in a pressing invitation to break the journey there, and this will be done, giving them a game in the afternoon. Another point that was hard to understand was the proposal to take the best part of a week in doing Mount Cook. Apparently the fact was overlooked that of the many scenic wonders in New Zealand the one that would be least appreciated by Canadian visitors was the ascent of a sndw-capped mountain, for their country .contains the famous Rocky Mountains, where they can see all the snow they want, end for several months in every year the whole country is under snow. Mount Cook will be a much more appropriate attraction to the Australians, when they go to Dunedin in 1934. Personal Notes.

Mr. Claude Allan has returned from a visit to Wellington, during which he saw most of the bowling people. Favoured with an invitation to attend the annual meeting of the centre, he was officially welcomed by the president, Mr. H. G. Mayer, and in the course of his reply he enumerated some of the striking differences he had noticed in Auckland and Wellington bowling. All the large clubs at the capital appeared to. him to be social clubs also, whereas there are very few clubs in Auckland where this features is at all prominent, prime attention here being given to the green itself. On the other hand two striking features i in Auckland were entirely absent in Wellington, winter play and one-day tournaments. During his visit there were several magnificent days, on which winter ; play could have progressed just as well as it does in Auckland, and they could easily stay at home or in the pavilion on wet days, or when the gentle Wellington zephyrs happened to make play unpleasant. As if to add strength to his recommendation, Mr. J. A. Doherty had just returned from Auckland, and he told them of hie amazement at finding winter play in full swing in this city, so he had several enjoyable games, quite a new experience for him during the winter. As for the one-day tournaments, several clubs acted on Mr. Allan's advice at once, and included a few in their programme for the coming summer. Mr. J. A. Godfrey (Ellerslie)., who has been very seriously ill for some time, is now convalescent, but it may be a few weeks before he is about again. Mr. G. H. Bray (Onehunga) is rapidly recovering from his operation, and his many friends hope to see him on the green again in a week or two.
