EUROPE STRICKEN. Unprecedented Floods Cause Damage In France. LIGHTNING DEATHS. •. j (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) LONDON, September 19. Terrific thunderstorms have followed upon remarkably warm, late summer weather in the greater pari; of Europe. Great damage has been done throughout France, particularly in Brittany. There the famous holiday resort, St. Malo, also Dinard and Dinan, have suffered unprecedented floods in the past two days. Raging tropical storms have torn up streets and rendered roads impassable. Many houses have been flooded. Stretches of railway lines in Brittany have been washed away. A train which was passing through St. Brieuc was buried under a landslide. At St. Malo 120 people are homeless, three persons were washed away in the River Ranee, at Dinan. Their bodies were recovered miles below. There were two deaths from lightning. Heavy seas are reported in the Mediterranean. Many wine barrels have been washed out to sea from riverside stores. London Short of Water. The record dry spell in England has been partially broken up by torrential rains in the south. London has not benefited. The Water Board has renewed its appeal for the strictest economy in the use of water. Two farm workers were killed and three other persons were injured by lightning while sheltering beneath a tret in Sussex. A boy was killed and his father was paralysed by lightning in Oxfordshire.
