PRIMAGE DUTY.

BUSINESS MEN DISAGREE. PROTEST PLAN ABANDONED. RESULT OF CONSULTATION. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. Consulted as to their opinion on the matter of protesting to the Government at the increase in the primage duty, the fourteen principal Chambers of Commerce in the country failed to agree.

Seven chambers in favour of protesting were: Auckland, Stratford, South Canterbury, Dunedin, Waiiganui, Napier and Oneliunga. Against any action were Wellington, Canterbury,. Hamilton, Oamaru, Hastings, Invercargill and Gisborne. Wellington disapproved the imposition of tlie duty, but took up the attitude that the matter was purely temporary. Invercargill failed to see that it would be of any use to jrrotcst.

Sixty chambers in the country are allied to the Associated Chambers, and it is customary to consult the principal bodies in any such matters. If there had been a majority, action would have been taken, but with feeling as it is the Associated Chambers will not move.
