STREET COLLECTIONS.

POSITION OF STANDS. NOT .GOOD FOR TRADE. A contention that street collections were not good for trade, and a suggestion that stands should not be placed outside shops, but only outside the offices of banks or insurance companies, were contained in a letter from a shopkeeper to the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. One man, said the secretary (Dr. E, P. Ncaie), had stated that people would not even pause to look at the displays in his window because a collection was being made on the footpath outside his shop. Mr. J. A. C. Allum: Hard hearted business considerations can hardly be brought in. The City Council has passed resolutions regarding street collections from time to time. It is difficult to tell which causes are unworthy. I think the * collections should be made only outside banks or insurance offices. "There is no objection to the collections being made," remarked the chairman, Mr. H. T. Merritt. "The only question is where they should be made." It was decided to confer with interested organisations and tho Auckland Rotary Club.
