CLAIM FOR INJURY.

ARBITRATION COURT CASE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, this day. A claim for £222 9/6, compensation, was brought in the Arbitration Court at Hamilton to-day before Mr. Justice Blair by Thomas James Gibson, coal and firewood merchant, of Hamilton East, against William Alexander Barber and Charles William Shepherd, trading under the name of "Crawford and Co., wood and coal merchants, Claudelands." Plaintiff, in a statement of claim, set out that in February, 1929, he was engaged hv defendants to cut into short lengths defendants' stock of firewood on their premises. Defendants agreed to pay plaintiff wages at the rate of 25/ a day. The terms of employment provided that plaintiff should supply his own circular saw, for the use of which defendants agreed to play plaintiff 12/6 a day. Plaintiff commenced work on February 6, and at 10.30 a.m. that day was accidentally injured by his hand coming into contact with the saw. His right hand was badly lacerted, and the forefinger had to be amputated. Plaintiff said he had been unable to work since. Defendants contended ' that their agreement with plaintiff provided that plaintiff should cut a specific quantity of firewood and should employ a benchman and an assistant at the rate of £2 13/6 per day; that plaintiff acted as his own benchman. All the other points raised in the statement of claim were denied.
