CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

ONEHUNGA INTERESTS. Tha president, Mr. Kirk-Jones, presided last night at a meeting of the Onehunga-Manukau Chamber of Commerce. The secretary announced that he had ascertained that the chamber would be entitled to three delegates to the conference of tho Associated Chambers of Commerce to be held in Auckland next ; month, and it was decided to devote next meeting to a discussion on the remits • forwarded by other chambers, as the . agenda paper would then be available. ] . The chairman said he was arranging , for a few lectures, but in view of the ' business for the next meeting, to be held j on October 9, it was decided not to invite . a lecturer until tho following meeting. , It was decided to compete, if possible, . with a district court at the next Winter • Show. The chairman said that Mr. C. F. , Millies had expressed his willingness to ' bo organiser, and it was agreed to ( appoint him and thank him. He thought i it was a good way to bring the district before the public, although he questioned . very much whether the Manukau could ' win, considering the way the points were

allotted. There was not enough weight ( given in previous years to the manufactures in which Manukau specialised, and • several exhibits were put in, in order to ; gain points, which were not really representative of the district. An effort should again be made to get the points ' altered. ■ Mr. J. E. Green doubted whether the district court was of any tangible value, but Mr. J. Pilkington and other speakers urged that the indirect advantages must not be overlooked. ' A committee was appointed to make . preliminary arrangements and report, the following to act: Messrs. C. F. Milnes 1 (convener), J. K. Ross, W. Lovering, ' F. H.'Dodd, T. H. McKeever, L. Bray and j the secretary. Discussing the representations which | it was decided at the last meeting to { submit to the Onehunga Borough Council, j the Mayor, Mr. E. Morton, explained that , the council has decided to include in the ; next poll of the ratepayers a loan pro- j posal to finance the proposed kindergarten, and also bathing sheds and a ladies' rest room. , I Tho chairman announced that a reply ( had been sent to the Associated Cham- ( bers of Commerce, opposing the addi- < tional primage duty,, and suggesting a ] higher duty on luxuries and foreign pro- ( ducts. It was decided to ask Mr. W. J. \ Jordan, M.P., to support an extra duty . on goods produced outside the British Empire, particularly luxuries, in preference to the additional primage duty. |

An inquiry was received from Paris for any natural products of the district, eatables or drinkables, and this will he forwarded to the producers interested. ' Mr. T. H. McKeever drew attention to a railway map in the tourist office, in which there was no mention of Onehunga. He thought that Onehunga should be "literally "on the map," and the chair- ( man promised to make inquiries. ( ]
