GREAT BUSH FIRES.
RASING ON EAST COAST.
FLAXES RACING WITH GAUt,
FIVE MEN MISSING AT NOON.
(By Telegraph—Special to "Star.") GISBORNE, this day* Vast bush and log fires are sweeping the high country between Gisborne and Wairoa to-day, and heavy stock lnffg are expected. A high gale, with a velocity estimated at 50 miles an hour, is carrying the flames before it, and fences will be very seriously damaged. Fears are entertained for the safety of five men from Te Kopua Station, whs went out this morning to cut fences, and at noon had not returned, nor had they been reported from neighbouring places. About 2000 acres of country waa involved in the fires at midday, and the flames were spreading rapidly. Another fire broke out near Opontama and ravaged properties there, including a station owned by Mr. R. C. Fisken, 4 well-known trotting owner. A settler named Torrie was throws from his terrified horse, which dashed forward into the flaming tm.lj and was lost.
