"NOVEL" MATCH.

WRITERS PLAY TENNIS. LONDON, October 4. For a wager, the famous writers, H. G. Wells, Arnold Bennett, and A. G. Gardiner, played a lawn tennis match. The challenger was Gardiner, who said he would beat Wells and Bennett at singles in successive sets. His first opponent was Bennett, with Wells acting as umpire and sometimes as ballboy. It was a strenuous contest-, Bennett, wearing a pullover and white flannels, and with a half-smoked cigarette between his lips, winning, 7 —5. Gardiner was not given a breather. Wells immediately took off his coat, and rolled up his sleeves. He plays left-handed, and a bad attack of doublefaulting proved his undoing, Gardiner winning, 6—2.
