PHENOMENON IN SOUTHLAJfI).
PREMATURE DARKNESS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent) IN VERCARGILL, this day. A dull red glow was observed in the sky over a large part of Southland on Saturday afternoon, and in some places it became so dark at 4 o'clock that artificial light had to be used. On Sunday the footpaths, roads and houses were found lightly coated with a red dust, while motor cars caught in the shower were spotted red. It ia surmised that the phenomena was dua to big bush fires on the Wast Coast or to an eruption.'
