NEW DIRECTOR WELCOMED.
NEW ZEALAND LEGISLATION PRAISED. ;* .; - ;• • V' (By Telegraph.—Own Conespondent.) WELLINGTON, this day. The new Director of Town Planning, Mr. J. W. Mawson, and his wife, were welcomed at a reception given in the Pioneer Club by Mr. Page, chairman of the Institute of Architects, and Mrs. Page. The Hon. R. A. Wright, the Mayor of Wellington and Mr. Hurst Seagar were among the : speakers. Mr. Wright was acting on behalf of the Government. Mr. Mawson defined town planning as "the application of all the sciences and common sense to the administration of cities and villages so that the finest amenities and advantages, consistent with financial limitations, can be obtained." He praised the work of his predecessor, Mr. Hammond, the draftsman of the town planning legislation, Mr. J. M. Christie, Mr. Hurst Seagar and others. The New Zealand legislation had been so drafted as to avoid some of the serious mistakes made in European legislation.
