GANG WARFARE.
SYDNEY'S RELAPSE.
Pedestrian Shot In Broad
Daylight.
GUNMAN ESCAPES IN TAXISYDNEY, October 7. The gang war in Sydney, which had been quiescent for several months, was renewed last night. A gunman stepped out of a taxi and shot down a pedestrian at the corner of Foveaux and Terry Streets, Surry Hills. The victim was Mr. William Dillon, aged 56. He was sent to hospital suffering from two bullet-wounds. The doctors hope he will recover. The police are now searching for the taxi concerned. Apart from the occupants of the car apparently only one eye-witness was present. He was a business man, Mr. Carrington, who was walking along Foveaux Street at the time. Mr. Carrington says he was actually between the gun and Mr. Dillon before the shots were fired. A man with his head bandaged sprang from the car, walked toward Mr. Carrington and, as the latter moved aside, said: "Now 1 have got you." The report of a shot then rang out. Mr. Dillon, who was behind Mr. Carrington, sagged to the ground. A second shot was fired as he fell. The gunman then entered the car again and it sped away into Elizabeth Street. All passed in a few seconds. Mr. Carrington turned to aid the injured man, who was bleeding from the mouth and chest, and when he looked up the assailant was gone.
