INSTEAD OF TRAM TICKETS.
THEFT OF £18. XO INTENTION TO STEAL. It was because he went on a drinking bout with the sum of £18 given to him by a stationer to purchase tramway concession cards that Roderick Austin Elder (38) got into trouble. Elder pleaded guilty at the Police Court this morning when charged with j theft of the £18. Chief Detective Hammond said that Elder had been staying, board free, with | the stationer, who sent accused with £18 to buy tram cards. He had been away for a week, and, when arrested on Saturday, Elder only had £9 of the money left. He had been on a drinking bout and spent the other half of the money. Elder told the magistrate that he was sorry he had put his friend to such trouble, and that he had no intention of stealing the money.. Elder was admitted to probation for 12 months, and ordered to make restitution.
