BUSH FIRES FANNED.
SETTLERS' HOMES MENACED. ASHBURTON, this day. The gale fanned smouldering bush fires in the Staveley district, and tho flames spread to the half-cleared scrub and destroyed several outbuildings. The settlors' homes were saved by strenuous efforts. In 0110 plantation of some 20,000 trees it is estimated that one-third to onehalf were destroved.
