THEFT ALLEGED.
BUILDING SOCIETY FUNDS.
ABOUT £1400 INVOLVED.
SUPPRESSION OF NAME REFUSED.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. Frederick William Webster, whose name had twice been suppressed by order of Mr. E. I». Whimp, J.P., appeared on remand in the Police Court this morning before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., charged with having failed to account for £235 11/11, money received by him on behalf of the Whangarei Co-operative Terminating Building Society. Senior Sergeant O'Grady applied for a remand until October 15, as the auditor, Mr. A. Rust, was ill in Auckland. He stated that nine further charges, involving in all about £1400, would be made against accused. The charges would be filed for the information of counsel for the defence. Counsel for accused asked that his name be again suppressed, as he was holding certain positions, and if his name were broadcasted through the Press Association there would be a danger of his losing them. The Magistrate: You must show some ground for the request. Counsel: The only ground is the one I have mentioned. The Magistrate: Where is my jurisdiction on that ground? I want to know where my power lies. * Counsel: Your' Worship has power to suppress any name you think fit. I The Magistrate: I will not make an order for suppression. The application of the police for a remand is granted, and bail will be renewed on the former terms,- i.e., two sureties of £250 each.
