There was much merriment in, the House of Representatives'this afternoon, when Sir Joseph Ward asked the Prime Minister if, in fixing the date of the. general electoni, he would avoid clashing with the Christehurch (carnival week, when many thousands of persons assembled in that city from all parts of the Dominion/ ■,'■■.. ■■'■'■ '■' Members were amused because - they scented an astute effort to induce the Government to announce this important fixture earlier than had been promised. The Prime Minister replied tha/B.probably the solution would be.to hold: the election well before.-the carnival , week. (Laughter and "Hear, hear;) r '.'.■■. Mr. P. Fraser: Next Thursday! Mr.'H. E.
