The steamer Beaubassin, with 14,000 cases of petrol aboard, is on fire at Port Louis, Mauritius. A tug is pouring wafer into the raging flames. The Beaubassin intended to sail for Reunion to-morrow. The Pan-Pacific Rotary Conference has closed. 'It has proved. successful beyond the most sanguine expectations, producing remarkable results and causing the Japanese to realise for the first time the true significance of the principles of rotary in bringing about intimate, personal contacts hitherto unknown.
The fact that the conferences were addressed by the Imperial Prince and Cabinet Ministers is regarded as significant and gives evidence of official attention and approval. DEATH OF BARMAID. Tho inquest was held into the death of Hilda Hancock, a barmaid, who was discovered on September 1, in a tumbledown washhouse, at Paddington. 'Lying nearby was Aubrey Chapman, with his throat cut. , The verdict passed at the inquest was one of murder by Aubrey Chapman, who was committed for trial. REQUIEM MASS. FUNERAL OP MR. E. P. FLEMING (Received 11.30 a.m.) SYDNEY,'this day. The funeral of Mr. E. P. Fleming, chief Civic Commissioner, was largely attended, those present including representatives of official business circles. A Requieni Mass was celebrated at St. i Mary's Cathedral by Archbishop Kelly.
