APPEAL TO BISHOPS
"Setting An Example In Lawlessness." EVANGELICALS' ASSERTION. (Australian Press Assd. —tlnitcd Service.) (Received I.SO p.m.) LONDON, October 5. Sir William Joynson-Hicks, the Parliamentary leader of the evangelical section of tho Church of England, has issued a statement in which he declares that the Church's trouble has arisen becauso certain clergy practised services contrary to the Church's doctrine. The bishops permitted the practices.to grow to such an extent that they came to the conclusion they were unable to deal with the irregularities, except by making legal those that were illegal, though Parliament twice declined to sanction the alterations. It was a very grave decision. They themselves were setting an, example in lawlessness. ■ ■
Sir William appeals to the bishops to delay action, saying: "We cannot give up the principles of the Reformation." REPORTED SAFE. MISSING ARCTIC STEAMER. (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) A wireless message from Fort-Smith states that the Arctic steamer, Distributor, which was reported yesterday to be eight days overdue on a journey from the MacKenzie River to Fort Smith, has arrived safely. ' There were 70 persons aboard the ship. The delay was caused by storms.,
