A SOLAR PHENOMENON.

In the "Star" of September 28 "Observer" wrote of peculiar circles which he had seen associated with the sun. I should be glad if, with your permission, "Observer" would send to the "Star," or to me (care of the , "Star"), more , detailed description of the phenomenon, especially as to the colours, relative diameters and widths of the rings hesaw. The remarkable point was that the rings • wero not concentric. It would be interesting to know upon which side of the sun the centre of the larger ring (likened to a "circle of wire") appeared to be at eleven o'clock on September 23. A likely time for such a solar phenomenon. to appear is October 20. In fact much disturbance is threatened during the next five weeks.- Likely days for earthquakes are October 20 and 21, October 30 and November o.' Our volcanoes will probably be more active about those dates. And stormy weather is threatened, particularly from about October 12 to 24. In writing to Squadron-Leader Kingsford Smith I ventured the opinion that if he did. not leave New Zealand early on September 29 he would not find a favourable opportunity till October 2S or 29, and, failing that, the weather would not be favourable till about November 10.
