WHAT 1 THINK OF CATS.

(By a MOUSE.) Cats! How that word strikes terror into me, and how my little heart goes pit-a-pat, whenever the name is mentioned! How I hate them! If "I had my way they would all ba dropped into the mill-pond with a" good big stone tied around every neck of them! You humans, however, think they are very useful animals—especially; when they hunt my people! Do you never think how cruel they are? . I will always remember a story told by one of my kinsmen whose people had removed toj a new. house. Having children, they decided to' celebrate the occasion by giving a party. Invitations were accordingly Bent out, and the guests promised, to come on being assured that there was no cat in.the household.

What a night they had! My uncle had obtained some tit-hits from the pantry, including tread, meat, cheese and biscuits,, and the hilarity was at its height when tho door slowly opened and —in peeped the head of a big black cat! What a scramble there was! ' What scuffling and scratching! ? ;

When my poor frje'nds looked out from their holes later "there was the cat grinning all over its face, arid looking altogether very pleased with .itself,!

Can you.wonder that wo mice hate cats? It inay' interest you to know that it was one of my- ancestors. who tried to "tell tho'cat." I come of a very ancient and noblo family. It is even said that wo came over with William tho Conqueroi" from. Normandy in 1066. Wβ have also travelled a bit, for another ofi my unfortunate relatives was drowned 'in the river when that wicked piper of Hamelin piped all the rats and mice into the .river. ■ • . -. .

I beg of you never to keep a cat. iJTdu will tlien earn the everlasting gratitude of my race, for you will be performing a noble and kind act in."the prevention, of cruelty to mice." • ' . ':
