JEALOUS HUSBAND'S CRIME.
: A.drama of love and jealousy in which a young and handsome woman and two •British ex-officers formerly - of crackcavalry regimen ts-rwere the central •figures, has culminated in a murder .trial in Johannesburg. The tragedy originated in the meeting,in the Transvaal diamond diggings of Captain Matthew Terry. Looby, late of the 12th Lancers, and Captain Richard -Andrew Baliol Scott, formerly of the 19th Hussars. ■'■ ;' ' ; ■ Both men were,married,-.and a friendship sprang up between, the two families. Later Looby suspected hi's wife's attitude towards Scott. Painful scenes followed. Finally Mrs. Looby left her husband to seek the protection of the Scotts.'-Search-ing for his wife, Looby encountered Captain Scott, "Something inexplicable" "came over him, and lie shot his friend dead. "i ■ / " Lost Control." .' ; At the trial a' defence of "uncontrollable . impulse" was pleaded. Loobjsaid that on one occasion at a cafe he heard Scott call Mrs. Looby. "Darling" and ?Love." Oh New Year's Eve he and his wife were about to dauce the first'dance of the New Year, when Scott came up and took Mrs. Looby from his.arms and danced with her. . • ' '".'■'
: Describing the shooting, Looby told the Court: "I felt my wife had-'been taken away from me. I thought of how "I had been treated for the last few weeks. All these things seemed to' strike my head simultaneously, and I completely lost' control. I remember firing. That -as all. . . .
I swear that I did not irtend to kill." When he heard lie was wanted bv the police he gave himself up. ■■' j\lrs.' Scott, who is 23, told the Court that when Mrs. Looby came to her in distress, begging her for shelter,- there were bruises on Jher face. She had no reason to . suspect improper • conduct between her husband and Mrs. Looby. ■Looby was found guilty of culpable homicide, and sentenced to three years' imprisonment with hard labour.
