LASCELLES' CASTLE.
Incendiarism On Eve Of Royal Visit. IRISH INDIGNATION. (United Service.) (Received 1 p.m.) LONDON, October 4. Portumna Castle, the Galway property of Lord Lascelles, was burned to the ground early this morning. The civic guards and soldiers rushed to the scene in a fruitless endeavour to extinguish the flames. Elaborate arrangements had been made to receive Lord Lascelles and Princess Mary. A search has revealed tins of petrol and paraffin and there was indignation throughout the Free State when incendiarism was confirmed.
HASTY REPORT.
ONLY SLIGHT DAMAGE. (Australian Press Assn.—United Service.) (Received 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, October 4. The hasty reports of the fire at Lord Lascelles' Irish home have been exaggerated. The outbreak was confined to the stables and the garage. The damage amounted to £200. Princess Mary and Viscount Lascelles will not alter their arrangements. They go to Portumna on Saturday, visiting Belfast on Thursday, and Will fulfil their public engagements. In the meantime they will occupy their land agent's house on Portumna estate. The castle was the scene of a fire in 1921 and the damaged portion was not rebuilt.
