OLD POTATOES DEAR. NEW COMING ON FAST. PLENTY OF CHEAP EGGS. A very large consignment of fruit came from Sydney this week, and was disposed of at the following rates: —Oranges, common Sydney, 5/6 to 6/6 per case; Joffas, 6/ to 8/; Valencia, 8/ to 12/; mandarins, small, 6/ to 8/; others, 10/ to 14/; passions, 14/ to 20/; pines, 24/ to 32/; loquats (according to condition), 8/ to 20/. Ripe bananas have kept scarce and dear, but the Tofua brought a shipment this week, and the shortage will be relieved when these ripen. The Waipahi is expected back from Suva about Tuesday week with another shipment. Local apples are still selling from cool stores with a slightly better demand for good quality Stumers. Supplies of Granny Smith are becoming small, and this variety commands several shillings per case premium. Other lines are coming out more or less wasty in condition. Latest quotations are as follow:— Apples: Sturmer, 6/ to 8/6 per case; Delicious, 5/ to 9/; Dougherty, 5/ to 7/6; Winesap, 5/ to 8/; Pride of Australia, 6/ to 8/; Rome Beauty, 6/ to 9/6; Granny Smith, 10/ to 12/6. Pears: Nellis, repacks, 10/ to 12/8; Coles, 9/ to 12/; P. Barry, 8/ to 9/. Oranges: Island, repacks, 17/ to 18/; Australian Navels, repacks, 11/ to 12/; Poorman, 5/ to 8/. Lemons: Local, 6/ to 10/. Tree Tomatoes: No. l's, 10/ to 12/; No. 2's, 6/ to 8/. Grapes: Californian, in barrels, 18/ to 20/; in cases, 14/.
Vegetables. New potatoes have been coming to hand much more freely during the past few days, and about 600 bags were offered to-day. The scarcity of old potatoes has, however, intensified the demand for new season's, and instead of weakening prices have firmed up. In sympathy with the trend of the wholesale market, values for old potatoes continue to advance. Celery, which has been in very full supply for some time, will be offered only in small quantities from now on, as the principal grower has finished his supplies this week. Onions are very dear. Canadians have been selling at 27/6 a crate, and Japanese a few shillings less. Green peas and French beans from the hothouse are on offer, and bring high prices, but asparagus is becoming more plentiful, and values are easier. Cabbages are offering freely, but the supply of cauliflowers is easing off. Current selling rates are:— Potatoes, Southern, 13/ to 14/ per cwt, new, l%d to 4d per lb; onions, 27/ to 28/ per crate; kumaras, 14/ to 17/ per cwt; cabbage, 3/ to 10/6 sack; cauliflower, 4/ to 15/ sack; swedes, 2/ to 3/ bag; pumpkins, 12/ to 21/ per cwt; green peas, 8d to 9d lb; beans, 1/ to 1/8 lb; lettuce, 1/ to 3/6 case; cucumbers, 4/ to 7/6 doz; vegetable marrows, 4/ to 8/ doz; cabbage, on benches, 1/6 to 3/6 doz; cauliflower, on benches, 3d to 1/, each; celery, heavy supplies first grade, 3/ to 4/6 bundle; others, 6d to 1/ doz; rhubarb, heavy supplies, 2/8 to 3/3 doz; spinach, 1/ to 3/6 doz; pumpkins, on benches, 3/ to 3/6 each; spring onions, 2d to 6d bundle; radish, 6d doz; carrots, parsnips, beet and turnips, 9d to 1/6 doz; asparagus, 1/ to 1/4 bundle; leeks, 4d to 6d bundle. Butter and Eggs. Hen eggs Tiawe Tbeen In plentiful supply at the marts this week, and have been in good demand at low prices. Duck eggs are plentiful and hard to sell. Current rates are: Hen eggs, full size, 1/2 to 1/3 per doz. Intermediate size, 1/1 to 1/2 Ducks, 1/0% to 1/1. ' . Farmers butter in pound pats is realising from 1/2 to 1/4 per lb. Poultry.
