TAIHAPE-NAPIER ROAD.
DEPUTATION TO MINISTER OF PUBLIC WORKS. Prospects government main HIGHWAY. _ A deputation composed of representatives of the Rangitikei and Hawke's Bay County Councils, in conjunction with the Taihape Chamber of Commerce, waited on the Minister of Public Works with a view to having the portion of the Tai-hape-Napier Road, between the Rangitikei River in the Rangitikei County and Wjllowford in the Hawke's Bay County, declared a Government road. In advo eating this it is hoped that the road will receive more attention than it is possible to be given at present. The bodies concerned will be disappointed to learn that the Minister of Public Works has written to Mr. John Mason, M.P., stating that the Government cannot see its way clear to comply with the request. The reply states that the total length of the section which the deputation desires the Government to take over is 36.4 miles, 22.S miles being situated in the Rangitikei County and 14.1 in the Hawke's Bay County. The length traverses the Kaimanawa Range and has grades ranging from 1 in 6 to 1 in 9, for long stretches, which are practically impossible for improvement, but which are reasonably safe for properly-equipped motor traffic.
