SPRING RACING.
THE AUCKLAND MEETING.
PROGRAMME FOR TO-MORROW.
THE FIELDS REVIEWED.
It only requires fine weather to make the Spring Meeting of the Auckland Racing Club, which opens at E.llerslie to-morrow, one of the most successful fixtures held there, for the horses are here, and in point of-number and quality the fields leave little to be desired. The course, if no more rain falls in the meantime, will be hard and fast, and the racing should be really good. The enclosures are looking at their best, and visitors will find much to please them in the beautiful horticultural display that forms such a striking feature of the course.
Two Classic Events.
Excellent Field Engaged In Guineas. The programme will commence with the Trial Hurdle Race, for which a dozen are carded. Kawini has been awarded 11.4, or 61b more than he carried into second place behind Llewellyn at Avondale last month. He should be improved by that effort, and should run well. Potoanui pleased by the manner in which lie won at the same meeting. He then had 9.11, and the distance was a mile and a-half. However, it has to be recollected that in the King Country Hurdle Race, two miles, at the Te Kuiti meeting at Ellerslie, he stayed on well to deadhpat with Kauri Park. He should go well Siaosi had his first hurdle race at the Avondale meeting, when he finished second to Potoanui. He was giving the latter 61b, and now is in receipt of 41b. Quincoma was beaten at Avondale with 10.10, and has been dropped 41b, but the firmer going should be in his favour. Llewellyn won the Grey Lynn Hurdle Race at Avondale with 9.3, and has now 9.13. He is meeting Kawini, who was on.ly half a length behind him, on 41b worse terms to-morrow, but still that weight should not seriously trouble such a big fellow. Farndon is a likely sort, for last season he won two hurdle races out of four starts —one mile and threequarters at Taumarunui and one mile and a-half at the Te Kuiti fixture at Ellerslie. Pekatahi Bcored at the Pakuranga meeting last Saturday, while of the others First Prince has the best credentials, though Tinopono would only need to be able to jump to be troubleeome. The best-backed may be KAWINI , POTOANUI FARNDON.
The Three-Year-Old Classic. Seldom is sucli a large field assembled for a classic race as that carded for the Great Northern Guineas. Fifteen remain in after final payments were made, and they include some of the best in the land. Cashier has done well this season. He won the Maiden Race, six furlongs, at Wanganui, and on the second day dead-heated with Desert Lad in a similar distance event. Last Saturday he won the Auckland Handicap, one mile, at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting in good style. Grand Tea won a division of the Maiden Race, seven furlongs, at the Avondale meeting, but was unplaced in the Guineas. High Falutin' finished third in the Wanganui Guineas, and also in the Avondale Guineas. Kinross has not a great deal to commend him this season. Sir Russell has been working well at Ellerslie, but like Grand Tea, he failed to get into the money in the Avondale Guineas. St.aghunter was a good two-year-old, and has been galloping well at Ellerslie recently. If he was to reproduce his track form he would be very hard to dispose of. Te Atiawa won over six furlongs at Wanganui, and has only got to stay on to be in the money. He can go very fast for a while. Toxeuma beat Roscrea and Consent at Trentham in July last over six furlongs, and since then has won a seven furlpng race at Napier Park, and also' the Hawke's Bay Guineas last Saturday, making three wins in as many starts. He is sure to be in demand. Episode was narrowly beaten in the Wanganui Guineas, and did not start in the Avondale Guineas owing to not having done too well since her arrival. However, she appears to have recovered, and went well at Ellerslie yesterday morning. She has any amount of pace, and it is just a tion of her staying on over the last bit. Prodice was a good two-year-old, and she won the Avondale Guineas so decisively that she will be one of the favourite selections. Of the others White Wings will appeal most. She led for a pood way in the Avondale Guineas and finished fourth, and on Saturday last was unlucky to be beaten in the Dunedin Handicap, the chief sprint event, at the Pakuranga meeting. The public will probably put most of their money on PRODICE. TOXEUMA. CASHIER.
The Big Sprint. , The Shorts Handicap is the first "leg" of the double. Aussie is at the top of the weights with 9.13, but that should not stop his chances of winning. In the All-Aged Stakes at Avondale he had 9.10 and won in 1.13 1-5. With 9.5 he annexed the Newmarket Handipap at Ellerslie in 1.12 4-5, and alsg won the Huia Handicap on the same course with 9.9 in 1.13 3-5. Yesterday at Ellerslie he covered five furlongs brilliantly in 1.1 2-5, so that he is pretty well. Commendation has not raced for a long time, but it should not require a great deal to get him into form. Hoariri, 4f the going is heavy, will take some heading off after his double at Avondale. Paganelli has not raced since last season, .but would only require to be at his best to give a good account of himself. Benzora lias been working well, and looks •' a likely sort. Kaiti is useful over six furlongs, and met with interference during the running of the Dunedin Handicap at the Pakuranga meeting, last Saturday. Nancy Lee looks as though she is coming into form, judging by her track work. She is a very smart sprinter when right. Lysander disappointed last season, but Freehold is one tlikt should go well. He had his first race this season in the Dunedin Handi-
cap at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting, and was one of the leaders till the straight, eventually finishing fifth. He has been working well. Of the others Oration and Lady's Boy may be most in request. When the final figures are rung up the favourites are likely to be AUSSIE FREEHOLD PAGANELLI The Mitchelson Cup. The Mitchelson Cup is one of the most important handicaps in New Zealand, for it is well endowed. Star Stranger is at the top of those engaged with 9.12, and under that impost is sure to run well. Last season he was fourth with 9.4, and dead-heated with Mask in the King Edward Handicap, one mile and a-quarter, on the second day. He was awarded 10.0 in the Avondale Cup, and the conditions were against him, for he was last all the way. With good going he will be much more handy. He is not at all badly treated after his performances last season. Mask was third to Laughing Prince and Kiosk in the Eclipse Stakes at Wanganui and failed
to get into a place in the Avondale Cup last month. However, last year he ran second in the Mitchelson Cup with B.S and dead-heated with Star Stranger with 8.12 for first money in the King Edward Handicap. He won the Autumn Handicap, one mile and a-half, with 9.4 at Ellerslie last Easter, and has a similar impost to-morrow. He is working well and should run well. Te Kara is on the same mark as Mask, which is 131b more than he ran third with in the Avondale Cup. With 8.9 he annexed the Plumpton Handicap, one mile and aquarter, on the second day. He is sure to give a good account of himself. Laughing Prince won the Eclipse Stakes at Wanganui, which is his second effort this season. He looks well and has been galloping well at Ellerslie. Last season, among other races, he won the Autumn Handicap, one mile and three, furlongs, at Wellington with 8.1, beating Tresham, Hynanna, Set Sail and others. The Hawk has yet to show form this season, and in the circumstances a mile and a-half may be a bit too far for him now. Valkon was fourth in the Avondale Cup with 7.13, and has now 7.12, and he will also have friends. Royal Mint was second in the same event and has been awarded 61b more. Mint Leaf was second in the Plumpton Handicap at the same meeting, but was beaten into fourth position in the Jellicoe Handicap with 8.0 on Saturday last. .He is in good condition. Desert Glow is well in at 7.0 and should prove the best of the lightweights. The chief fancies may be ;• STAR STRANGER .. 'tiAUGHING PRINtBE MASK.
The Hunters' Steeples. Importer won the Hunt* Club Cup at Ellerslie last Saturday veiy easily at the finish frith 10.9, add he has been awarded 11.5 for the Hunters' Steeplechase to-morrow. He slioiild ron another good race. Clockwork failed to get into the. money in . that event, but Master Arch was second to Importer. He is now meeting the latter on 71b better terms; Tago San annexed the Greenmount Steeplechase-at Ellerslie in- good
style on Saturday. Pompeius was not judiciously ridden at Ellerslie last Saturday, otherwise he would have troubled Importer more than he did. Marita is a promising sort and may be the best of the others. The best backed may be IMPORTER POMPEIUS MASTER ARCH. The Babies' Race. The Welcome Stakes is for two-year-olds, and eight are left in. Ceremony has not shown any form this season, but First Money ran well for a while in the Avondale Stakes, which was Won easily by Supremacy, with Hunting Day second. The two latter are engaged to-morrow. Clever has pace, but was not raced at Avondale. This filly was unlucky at Wanganui. Eaglet showed some speed by the manner in which she finished third in the Nursery Handicap at Avondale to Flying Prince and Imperial Guard. The principal fancies may be SUPREMACY FIRST MONEY HUNTING DAY. * The Hack Race. A large field is engaged in the Gordon Handicap. Storm Fiend is top weight with 9.0. At the recent Avondale meeting he won over a mile with 8.12 and dead-heated with Maori Boy over six furlongs, carrying 9.12 on the second day. He is sure to be in demand. Micrometer won a seven furlong event and two mile races last season. Modest Boy finished second to High Pitch over seven furlongs at the Avondale meeting last month. Royal Lineage has been working satisfactorily and should go a good race. Arikitoa wot a seven furlong and a mile event at Avondale recently, while of the others War Officer, Mountain Guide and Metellus may be the best. The best backed may be STORM FIEND ARIKITOA MODEST BOY. The Concluding Event. The programme will conclude with the Flying Handicap and a strong field is engaged. When the machine closes it may be found that the principal selections are AWARERE FLYING JULIET WHITE FANG. The first race is timed to start at 12.2 p.m. and there will be a frequent train and tram service to the course. The programme is as follows:—
5.17 p.m.—FLYING HANDICAP of 500sovb. Seven farlongs.

CARTERTON CLUB.
SPRING MEETING AT CLAREVILLE. (By Telegraph—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. The annual meeting of the Carterton Racing Club will be neld to-morrow at Clareville, and the track should be in good order. There is a big field in the Trial Plate, but the form is not exceptional. Trentham stables are well represented, and possibly Roi de Val, who has improved since he was beaten at the Grand National meeting, Pari and Imatea Girl may run prominently. Otauru Lass, while still a maiden, was running on so well at the end of her races at Marton and Wanganui that she 'will be well suited by the extra two furlongs in the Carrington High-weight. Otauru Lass goes as well as any hack at Trentham, and she looks like being very hard to beat. Billion appears to be the next best on recent form. Talisker and Vigilance will be backed to win the County Cup. The field is not strong, and a well-seasoned horse like Othon may go well under 7.0. He performed well on the flat at the Gisborne meeting a few weeks ago, and has lately been doing well over hurdles. The Carterton Hack, for sprinters, may see Grey Mist, Baskier and Tripos doing well. There are only five in the Bunny Memorial. High Disdain, on last season's form, may be the favourite. Decoy Bird is an improved horse now, and has been working well at Trentham, but he is in another race also. The Taratahi Hack should see Billion and .Courageous prominent. Rabbi, who will be having his first race, is a three-year-old by Paladin from Rachel, and is well spoken of. I Royal Game is the likely favourite for [ the Maiingaraki Handicap, but Xing Midas and Vigilance should also go well. There is a big field in the concluding 1 event, the Electric Handicap. Good beginners like Banket ( who ran wall at Wanganui) and Arrow Boy (who was 1 placed at Dannevirke) will be well backed. • Dancing Star on the minimum is a likely sort. , ... .
STABLE AND TRACK NOTES.
(By WHALEBONE.)
FIXTURES. October 6—Carterton Racing Club. October #—Kurow Jockey Club. October 6, B—Auckland8 —Auckland Racing Club. October IX, 13—L>uc<:din Jockey Club. October 13—Masterton Racing Club. October 20, 24—Waikato &.C. Mr. I. G. Duncan intends to race his two-year-old filly, Francolin, at Dunadin next week. Oratrix, Concentrate, Cimabue and Gold Tinge are due to leave Sydney for Wellington to-day. A. E. Ellis will ride Count Cavour in the New Zealand Cup, while his lightweight brother, L. J. Ellis, at present in Sydney, has been engaged for Battle Colours. Barryanda (Martian —Per Arma), a full-sister to Martarma, has been sold for stud purposes in Australia. A disappointment on the race track, she should fill the role of matron satisfactorily. . E. Ellis will be riding at the Aucklcnd meeting and will have the mounts on Benzora, Prodice and Arikitoa on the first day. He will then go to Wingatui, where his rides will include Goblin Market in the Guineas. The Chokebore stable will be represented at the Dunedin meeting by Childsplay, Prickles, Quarterdeck and Impertinence. It is probable that the first-named two will contest the Dunedin Guineas, and if so, F. E. Jones and C.Emerson will do the riding. White Wings registered a smart gallop over five furlongs at Ellerslie yesterday mirning, yhen she defeated Benzora, Kaiti, and Oration, in fast time for the distance. This filly is in capital condition, and with the going firm she is sure to run prominently ,in the Guineas. The Acre mare Rillet broke away from her attendant at the New Plymouth course on Monday, and bolted out of the gates and down the street. She was eventually cauglit, and though she was not hurt, it is feared she bruised herself. She may not go to Carterton.
R. Johnson is taking Horomea and Anolo to Carterton. The former has disappointed her connections several times lately, and haß done very little fast work since Wanganui. Anolo has started only once since the Stratford Cup on New Year's Day.
The Avondale Guineas winner, Prodicc, has arrived at headquarters looking in great order after her racing at the suburban meeting. She went attractively iu a seven-furlong gallop on the course proper at Ellerslie yesterday morning, and it is also in her favour that she can gallop in any sort of ground.
Huirangi Girl, who was allowed to forfeit her engagement in the Hunters' Steeplechase, will contest the Onehunga Steeples, to be run at Ellerslie next Monday. The Taranaki mare was given a school over the big fences at head-quar-terg yesterday morning, and gave a good safe jumping display, although she did not have a great amount of pace on.
Handy registered an attractive performance over a round of the steeplechase fences at Ellerslie on Thursday morning, and his effort gained him a lot of friends for his coming engagements. .The Gisborne-trained gelding is a fine type of a steeplechaser, and his condition indicates that he has done a solid preparation, while few cross-country candidates have given a better display in their initial run over the Ellerslie fences.
Supremacy was sprinted down the i straight at Ellerslie yesterday morning, and moved very freely. The son of Chief Ruler and Lucella is in capital condition for his Welcome Stakes contest to-mor-row, and is sure to run prominently. He defeated his field in the Avondale Stakes very easily, and although it is argued that some of those he beat will do better on a firm track, they will need to, in order to bridge the gap that was between them at the Avondale meeting.
There will be no better conditioned hack racing at Ellerslie than Arikitoa, who recently captured a double at the Avondale meeting. When this gelding won the New Lynn Handicap on the second day at Avondale, he went a good race, and showed his ability to run out a mile in good style, besides which he registered faster time than it took to run the Guineas on the same day. Arikitoa is engaged in the Gordon Handicap to-mor-row, and is sure to command strong support.
Royal Mint, who is looking more hardened in condition since racing at the Avondale meeting, is at Ellerslie once more, and will contest the Mitchelson Cup to-morrow. He galloped over a round on the course proper yesterday, and although not a good track horse, ho did his work rather welL The Catmint gelding went a solid race when he ran second to Bisox in the Avondale Cup, and if he repeats that form to-morrow he will be in the picture when they pass the winning post.
Bought at a high figure in New Zealand, Satrap has done nothing in public to warrant the high opinion formed by his owner, but that he is no hopeless case he showed at Victoria Park l&st week (says a Sydney writer). On the outside of the course proper, Satrap ran a mile in 1.47. The merit of the effort was contained in the fact that the last three furlongg occupied only 395. Satrap has shown great pace in his Sydney efforts, but lack of stamina has marked his performances. In New Zealand, however, Agrion only narrowly beat him in the Great Northern Derby.
