AUSSIE'S BRILLIANT EFFORT.
Beautiful i spring ~ weather prevailed this morning for the final gallops at Ellerslie, and'in- consequence the work waa most interesting. The course proper, more than two trestleß out from the rails, was open, and No. .3 grass ■track was also available, while the hurdle track and steeplechase course were also in use. The going was good. Aussie put up a brilliant performance by running five furlongs in 1.1 2-5 from the new post. .This is the best that has been eeeri. over the distance at Ellerslie for a fong time past. White Wing's and Staghunter, two Great Northern Guineas candidates, worked attractively, while First Money, Hunting Day and Clever did best among . the two-year-olds. Laughing :■ Brince went well over a round, arid Mask and star Stranger also pleased by their efforts over a mile. The Course Proper. " . ' The first to work were Restaurant and Sleepy Sol, who ran: seven furlongs in 1.34, the last half-mile taking 53 2-ss. The former finished in front. King Emerald ran, a mile from the new post. He was picked up by Gold Money at the six furlongs, and covered the last seven furlongs in 1.35. They ran the last six furlongs in 1.21 4-5. Episode defeated Lysander by several lengths over six furlongs in 1.19.
Commendation, who moved off slowly, ran half a mile in 53 IL-5s- He is rather big, and will be improved with a race or two. Thursby and War Officer ran six furlongs in 1.20 2-5, Thursby being slightly., in front at the finish. Valkon and Staghunter jumped away at the seveA-furlong post, running the ;lirst furlong in 12 2-ss, two in 255, three in 38s, and completing the distance in 1.31 3-5. Staghunter, who Went nicely pleased most at the finish:*: ..... : ' Mask and Star Stranger, who want away from the new mile post, covered -the first two furlongs ill 25 3-59, the half-mile in 525, and completed the , distance in 1.44 4-5. Mask was in front throughout, and had about a length's advantage at the finish. Winsome Boy beat Respirator by several lengths over sis furlongs, run in 1.20 1-5. ' * Royal Mint beat Importer and Brampton over a round in 2.7 3-5. The Mitchelson Cup candidate was kicked aloug at, the finish. ■ • Corinax and The Lover went seven furlongs in 1.32! £4, -the former finishing in#'front. 4 Koyal lineagelfolshed well in front of Vivo over six Iwlongs in 1.20 2-5. Ohinemtfri had not difficulty in accounting, fpirjgslda at tjw end of seven furlongs,' ruin in. 1.34 b5/,. : The tWo-year-olda Hunting Day and First Mouey jumped off at tfiehaty-mile post, and ran hou&in 50 i-ss. They were practically on' 1 terms at the finish, and it was a good performance*. . Lomint and Modest Boy ran six furlongs in 1.19 l-SJ Modest -Boy being in front at the' 17£ l 'VAtod court and' Eager Rose, traversed, six furlongs in I.Bl* There wae little between them at the end. , Bombarder had lot of pace on when he, reached the fow-fuflong post and ran home in 514-sb. 'Spj- i " * ? Blue Grey and Neil sprinted down the straight. V r' : -(' Nancy Lee went nicely oyer five furlongs, covering the distancein 1.6 1-5. Laughing Prince, Sir Archie and Mint Leaf started out over. a', round. Sir .Archie led along the back and across the s ;top, where Laughing Prince was handy to him. The latter took'.charge in the
straight and finished in front of Mint Leaf, with Sir Archie close Up. The i first three furlongs were run in 40s, ] the half mile in 54, and the first five 1 furlongs in 1.7 2-5, the round being j accomplished in 2.2 2-5. It was a pleasing effort on the part of Laughing Prince, but Mint Leaf was also going j well at the finish. Golden Wedding was in front of 1 Nurjuhan over five furlongs in 1.4 2-5,' the last half mile taking 51 2-ss. h < Flying Juliet pleased by the manner in which .she ran half a mile, covering the distance in 51 3-ss. Hyde PaVk, wiio went off slowly and was not hurried throughout, ran seven t furlongs in 1.41 2-5. The last six furlongs, occupied 1.27. Miss New Zealand finished several lengths in front of Clockwork and Young Thurnham at the end of seven furlongs in 1.30 2-5. i White Wings, Kaiti, Benzora and Oration were in that order, though close together, at the end of five furlongs in 1.3 1-5. 'White Wings did not jump away as quickly as the others. The first furlong was run in 13 l-5s and the first two in 255. Metallua and High Faint in' covered six furlongs, the last five taking 1.7 1-5. Billikins traversed half a mile, the last three furlongs taking 41 4-ss. She could have done better. Cashier ran seven furlongs in 1.32 3-5, the last six taking 1.19 2-5. Catkin worked very freely over seven furlongs, which he covered in 1.31 3-5, the . last six taking 1.18 4-5. Storm Fiend was in front of Bahama at the end of six furlongs in 1.22. Freehold ran five furlongs from the old post in 1.4. The first furlong was covered in the first two in 255, and the last half mile in 51s. Royal Lineage finished in front of Vivo- over six furlongs in 1.20 2-5. White Fang went away very slowly from the six furlong post and ran home in 1.20., He covered the last half mile in 51 3-ss. ' > " t, After Breakfast. Sir Russell and Lido jumped away at the half-mile post and finished up theif task in 51 l-ss. Sir Russe.ll went well and was too good for his eoinpaiffon. . Master Arch was given strong work; but was not timed. . - r . Royalfonn and- Karamu -were com-; panions ov£r- a mile, the last seven furlongs being run in 1.38 1-5. Bulolo sprinted home from the fouf furlong post in 50 2-ss, and Monetize did a-similar journey in 525. Violation aijd Te 'Atiawa. were taken up to the new five furlong post and came home in 1.5/2-5. .Violation was several lengths in front at the finish, but Te Atiawa is a bad track- worker. Killute and Master Clements ran six furlongs* in 1.21. ' Master Doon got a break on Nucleus at tiro seven furlong post, but the mare was up .with him when the post was reached. The time was 1.35 3-5. . -Prodice had Desert Glow as a com pani w^e running seven "furlongs, and ' ni 7 finished on terms in 1.32. The Fox gave Blue Spear a start from the five furlong post and beat him home in 1.5 2-5. Transformer was much too good for Rafferty at the end of seven furlongs, which took 1.36 4-5. The Treclare colt in J. Williamson's stable was in front of Lady Suzanne at the end of a three furlong task ro-39 2-ss. Aussie gave Awarere several lengths' start in a sprint from the new five furlong post and beat him home in'l.l 2-5. This is the best gallop recorded at Ellerslie over the distance for a number of years. _ Aussie, as usual, was plated.' Arikitoa and Flying Prince finished on terms at the end of naif a mile, run in 52 l-ss. Clever jumped away at the half-mile post, running the first furlong under 12s and finishing up her task in 60 2-ss. This was a good gallop. Lady Cintra jumped away at the mile post and was timed to run the last seven furlongs in 1.30 3-5. v . " Luminary went freely over six furlongs which occupied 1.20 3-5. Papatu, who began very slowly from the new five, was timed to run his last half-mile in 51 3-ss. No. 3 6ras». Pompeius ran the last six furlongs of his work in 1.21 1-3. Tea Money and Zane Qrey covered half a mile in 53 l-ss. Bert Hinkler and Kawainga got to the end of half a mile in 54 4-6s. Miss Alma completed a round in 1.43. The Jumpers. First Prince (M. Conway) and Pekatahi (H; Dulieu) were sent a couple of schooling hurdles. Pekatahi give a good display, but First Prince crashed into the second obstacle and fell. He was not further persevered with. M. Conway received slight concussion and was sent to the hospital. Potoanui (E. Rae) and Glenotus! (Sharkey) gave a good display over a i couple of hurdles. " ' i Piet (H. Dulieu) and Harbour View (Olive) were associated in a round over four schooling hurdles, completing their task eafely. Harbour View jumped high, but his display was quite satisfactory for a novice. Huirangi Girl (C. Scott) gave a safe exhibition over the steeplechase fences on the flat and was afterwards worked on the course proper. Handy (Burgess), Uralla (Olive) and Rahepoto (H. Dutfeu) were sent over a round of the steeplechase course, including the hill. Handy was in front over the first four fences, but Uralla took charge along the back, but the pair were on terms again as they went up the hill. Coming Gown they were several lengths in front of Rahepoto, but the lastnamed finished on and .was close behind Handy at the finish, with Uralla alongside. Handy gave a first-class exhibition for his initial display over Ellerslie country.
