MISS CHRYSPALL LEADING.

The lir«it round of the final of the Xew Zealand ladies'' golf championship was played at Middlemore this morning before a large gallery of spectators. The weather was fine, but an easterly wind was somewhat puzzling. The players in the final are 'Mrs. Guy Williams, of Masterton, and Miss D. Chryetall, of ChrLstchurch. The play was somewhat disappointing, neither player reproducing previous form. At the end of the first round Mies Chrystall was three up. The second round is being played this afternoon.

MISS CHRYSTALL IN LEAD.

The golf of this morning wjus not—to be compared with that seen in yesterday's semi-finals, and the large gallery of spectators were more or less disappointed. Poor play characterised the move to the first hole, which was halved in fives, against a bogey score of 4. Going to the second Mrs. Williams sliced her drive into the rough. Miss Chrystall was on the green in two. Mrs. Williams took three to get on the green. Miss Chrystail's first putt left "her with a 4ft putt to win the hole. She missed and the hole was halved in fives. Bogey. 5. Miss Chrystall drove the longer ball to the next hole and was' on the green with her second. She tipped the hole with her third and winning 4-5 was one up. Bogey 4. Both drives to the fourth hole were of good length and direction, Miss Chrystall's being slightly the longer ball. She was on the »green pin high with her second. Mrs. Williams' second and approach were not good. Miss Chrystall won the hole 4-5. Bogey 5. Miss Chrystall 2 up. The spectators got a thrill at the next hole. Mrs. tVilliams' second came to rest at the bottom of the gully, but she earned the applause of the spectators for her'splendid recovery. Mrs. Williams sent away the better ball off the next tee. The seconds were dead into the wind. Miss Chrystall sliced her approach and it finished in the rough, but she got out nicely. Mrs. Williams' second was of good direction, but short. She just missed a Oft putt for 4. Miss Clirystall's putt went in off Mrs. Williams' ball and she won the hole, 4-5. Bogey 4. Miss Chrystall 2 up. Both were on the .seventh green with their lee shots ana etch taking three putts, the hole was halved in fours. Bogey 3. Miss Chrystall 2 up. Two great drives were sent down, the wind off the eighth tee. Mfs. Williams' drive of over 200 yards'ran across the green. Miss Chrystall's was pin high, but in the rough by the fence. She had a hard shot to get out. Mrs. Williams'.second left her with a Oft putt to go out'in three. She. missed and Miss Chrystall, getting out of difficulty nicely, the hole was halved in fours. Bogey 4. Miss Chrystall 2 up. Both 'players made bad drives at the ninth and both got out of trouble well. Mrs. Williams' fourth was in the rough by . the tea-tree beyomi the sand bunker. She got out of the ; difficulty, but had to hole out au Sft putt for half. She missed and Miss Chrystall took the hole, 0-7, and turned for home 3 up. Bogey G.

Mis* Clirvstall took 43 and Mrs. Williams 40 to go out. Off the tee to the tenth hole both players were in the sand and the hole was eventually halved in fives. Bogey 3. Miss Chrystall 3 up. At the eleventh both players were on the green with their seconds. They .each took three putts and halved the hole in fives. Bogey 4. Miss Chrystall 3 up. At the twelfth Miss Chrystall badly sliced her drive and had to play out of a depression. Mrs. Williams' second was a good ball to the right of the green. Miss third was on the far edge. Her fourth over-rau Mrs. Williams' third. Mrs. Williams holed out ia 5—7. 80-rev o. Miss Chrystall 2 up. Off the *tee across the wind going to the thirteenth Mrs. Williams was on the green. Miss Chrystall was to the right. She pitched her ball over the sand mound and it came to rest on the bank beyond 10 feet from the pin.
