BROWN'S BAY BUS SERVICE.

an application declined.

-RESIDENTS DEPRE\iTE COJ^PETITION.

An application by the Marine Suburbs Bus Company, lately operating at Birkenhead, for a service license to ply between Devonport and Brown's Bay,, was last evening declined by the_No. fr Licensing Authority, sitting at Dewoport, on the grounds that the present service was adequate, that the residents were satisfied with the transport arrangements now existing, and that competition would result in financial trouble for the present service. Mr. L. Alderton appeared for the Marine Suburbs Bus Company and claimed that public convenience demanded a more frequent and up-to-date service. There was a growing population along the East Coast bays, which was not properly catered for by the existing license, and the summer traffic necessitated a more frequent and reliable bus service than was at present provided. His clients had four good vehicles, which would establish a frequent and convenient means of communication for the Brown's Bay area. Mr. G. H. Wallace appeared for Messrs. Lovell and Silich, who at present hold the,- service license for this route, and contended that it would be unfair to allow competition with his clients during .the summer months when they had maintained a regular timetable during the winter at a loss. In evidence, he elicited the facts that at present approximately thirty peffple a day travel on this route and the present time-table meUnt a running loss of about £3 per day. This could only be recouped by the summer trade. Mr. G. H. O'Halloran, member for the Takapuna riding of the Waitemata County Council, objected on behalf of the County Council to another license being issued. He considered that it was uncalled (or by existing traffic needs and the consequent damage to the roads of the county by the heavy buses of the applicants would be a serious item to the ratepayers. This objection was supported by a petition numerously signed by Brown's Bay residents, and after a brief discussion the chairman, Mr. E. Aldridge, delivered the decision of the licensing authority as above. Mr. Silich was expressly informed that he must forthwith submit a summer time-table, and that all buses intended to be used must be submitted for inspection and license before being placed on the road.
