BETTER ROADS IN NORTH.

GRANTS FOB IMPRQ 7£MENT. PAPAROA TO RUAWAI. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) DARGAVILLE, this day. The' Hobson County Council has received authority to spend £200 in metalling the bad portion of the road between the Whatoro and • Donnelly's crossing railway stations, via Trounson Kauri Park. The work Will be put in hand immediately, so that the road may be in order for the visit of the British Empire forestry delegates on October 20. The improvement of this road will be a great boon to settlers in the vicinity of the park and to the Tutamoe settlers, who have had great difficulty this season in transporting their cream to Donnelly's crossing. .* The deputation which waited on the Prime Minister and Mr. F. W. Furkert, chairman of the Highways Board, asking for a heavy traffic road between Paparoa station and Ruawai, was Well received. It was arranged that the Otamatea County Council should draw up an estimate of the cost of making a class B (four ton) highway which will entail widening the metal from 10 to 12 feet. The estimate will be submitted to the M&in Highways Board. The traffic over the Northern Wairoa River Bridge on the Dargaville-Maunga-turoto main highway during September consisted of, 1509 motor , vehicles, 200 motor cycles, 182 horse-drawn vehicles, 150 horses with riders, 272 cycles, 297 pedestrians and 310 head of cattle.

NEW BRIDGE AT WAZWERA.

(By Telegrapn.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. Another of the few remaining barriers to easy road communication .between Auckland and the North is to be removed. The bridge spanning: the Wai r wera tidal estuary is to Be replaced by a structure of five 20 feet spans, in ferroconcrete. The earth filling on the southern side will be widened and raised. The bridge has been a bugbear to motorists. Work was begun yesterday,-and the improvements will cost £5000.
