ROUGH AND READY.
Many pleasant surprises have been sprung upon the spectators throughout the season by various teams gaining an unexpected victory or giving an exceptionally fine display of hockey, but it was left to Epiphany and Otahuhu in their clash last Saturday to give the most crude and primitive exhibition. Why at this stage of their activities two teams that have played throughout a senior grade competition—one being the winner of the section—could not enter into a contest and show at least some elementary tactics of the stick game was beyond all comprehension. It would be an idle waste of time to comment in any way, except condemning the play. Senior players should at least refrain from so much talking, especially when directed against the "whistle." Had several of the most fluent of the offenders stood on the sideline and watched the actions on the field they would have wondered why the referee did not apply more whistle. Speed, indiscriminate slogging" of the ball, , rules galore broken, and in some oases a lack of control of one's feelings were outstanding features. Tht. most fitting finish to the game was the ordering off the field of two Otahuhu players, who deserved all they got. One Epiphany player can consider himself lucky in not meeting a similar penalty.
