WIFE'S SECRET HOARD.
KEPT IN POT CUPBOARD.
CONFISCATED BT HUSBAND.
SAVED SINCE HER HONEYMOON.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, this day. A secret hoard of £336, concealed in a paper bag in the pot cupboard of the kitchen of his house m Frankton, was discovered by William Henry Haggard, railway bookstall proprietor, in July last. He confiscated the money, which led to a claim for its return by his. wife, May Haggard, at the Magistrate's Court to-day. According to Mr. McGregor, for the plaintiff, the parties were married in 1924, and went to England for & honeymoon. Defendant's relatives treated his wife very badly, and when he was, about to return to New Zealand he promised his mother that he would return for good in five years. Plaintiff told him she would not go back to England with him. He replied that she could please herself, but if ishe did not go he would leave her destitute. On coming back to New Zealand plaintiff took charge of the Morrinsville bookstall, and later moved to Frankton. Her husband allowed her 25/ a week for pocket-money and £3 15/ for housekeeping. Out of this she managed to save £330, and she kept it in a paper bag in a cupboard. In July last her husband found the bag, and confiscated the money. The wifefi in evidence, declared that she saved the money as provision for the future, against the time when her husband would leave her. She had been secretly putting money away ever since her return irom her honeymoon. She also had. a savings bank account' in which there was £76. She used to take the money down to the bookstall every day in a dress-basket. Whenever she made, a deposit in the bank her husband accompanied her. She admitted she led him to believe that the money in the .bank was all she had. Wrapped around the money was a document in her handwriting, stating that the money was her own. She burned this when her husband seized the money, and she would not disclose its contents. The hearing is proceeding.
