SMOKING IN MINE.
"POSITION GROWING SERIOUS" THREE DOBSON MEN FINED. MAXIMUM PENALTY IN* FUTURE. (By Telegraph.—rress Association.) GREYJIOUTH, this day. M. Muir and E. Hallinan, junr., were fined £2 each and costs to-day for having had matches in their possession while they were working in the Dobson mine. Thomas Hills was fined the same amount for having had a cigarette in his possession. He was also fined £1 and costs for using threatening language, and £1 and costs for assaulting a deputy. Counsel for the prosecution said the company had every reason to believe that smoking was going on in the mine, and anything might happen. The position was becoming serious, and in future cases he would ask that the maximum penalty be inflicted.
