BOWLING.

SUMMER SEASON OPENED.

THE SCENE AT CARLTON.

PRESS AND PRINTERS DEFEATED.

(By TRUNDLER.)

For many years the last Saturday in 1 September was associated with the summer season through the official opening of the St. Helier's Club, but as they now , open a few weeks later the course was j clear last Saturday for the Press and t the Printers to open the season with their 6 postponed match at Carlton. The spacious grounds rarely, if ever, looked better s than they did on Saturday, brilliant sun- I shine adding to the deep hue of four macrniticent greens, which reflect great credit on the veteran superintendent, Mr. , J. S. Kilpour, and his faithful lieutenant. •Mr. R. Montgomery. The only sign of ' the recent stormy weather was the worn 3 appearance of two or three of the hundreds of anemones which gave a blaze of colour to the side-walks. In welcoming the ten rinks of visitors, i the club president, Mr. A. B. Barter, paid 1 them a compliment which has probably ] never been equalled at a similar function. A nation's ambassador is supposed to ] learn the language of the country to ! which he is accredited, but Mr. Barter went the length of learning the language of his visitors. . Addressing the Press, he trusted they • would use their traditional "power" in a merciful manner, and that at least some of the Carlton teams might figure in the j "leader column," with not too many i under the "lost" heading. Speaking to the printers, he hoped that I their games would be even, and that •when a "measure" was "justified" the difference would not be more than a "thin space," or at the most an "en quad." He hoped that when a 6kip thought it necessary to "distribute," and "pied" the head, they would not be "out of sorts," and that in the final "cast up" they would mostly "end even," and not have too much "over-running." At the adjournment Mr. Barter was in facetious mood, and expressed the obligation which the bowlers owed to the Press, and how their hearts glowed with pride when they saw a reference to a fellowmember to the effect that "Jim Snedden drew a beauty with his last bowl," even though this was modified by the statement that "it was about time he did, for it was long overdue." Mr. Barter's jocular words were rather prophetic, for the Carltonian he mentioned had to lower his colours to Stacey Adeane. However, this is not altogether surprising, for-Stacey has been on the mark lately, and when he gets anything like an even run it is £10,000 to a gooseberry that he will win. *•' Last Saturday he was one of the only three winning skips. Mr. Barter referred to the representative nature of the visitors present, from editors and managers down to the printer's devil, who gets blamed for the mistakes. He gave a particularly warm welcome to Mr. R. M. Hacket, ,_i,„editpr, of the "Herald," Mr. J, A. Sher-! •r;.,vxiff, secretary of the Brett Printing Com- . pany, Mr.* Fred Clarke, news- editor of the "Star," and Mr. Gilbert G}ark, pre- ■ siclent of the Master Printers' Associa- :■;* tion, and the first two made a graceful • . response. f- 1 The Rocky Nook Finals. The finals in the Rocky Nook tournament were played on Saturday, when Allely (Mount Albert) defeated Chambers (Rocky Xook) in the semi-final of the eleven heads, and Addison (Edendale) defeated Bou-skill (Rocky Xook). There was still plenty of time for 21 heads in the final and Edendale started ■- off very strongly- -for the first six or seven heads-, their score being helped by a good five. Allely was apparently not disconcerted, however, and as he was well on his game he was able to save a good many critical positions, eventually reaching twelve up, with two heads to go. This proved too heavy a hurdle for the younger club and while they were trying to gel two sixes Mount Albert scored a point, so the last head was not played. J. Picken, J. Nesbit, ,T. Thomas, R. J. Allely (Mount Albert) '24, v. A. Smith, G. Bradsliaw, W. Brownett, C. A. Addison (Edendale) 11. In the ""absence of the club president, the competing teams were both con* pratiilated on their fine play by the senior vice-president, Mr. H. C. Cllffe, and prizes to both teams were presented by the other vice-president, Mr. W. H. Tongue. The Challenge Matches. The Edwin Stars changed hands on Saturday, Irving Clarke adding another to his many fine wins. However, West End did not get it all their own way, j for all admit I'd that Jervis Wright and his Epsom men played a wonderfully strong defensive game. The results, in another column, might indicate a fairly easy win, but Epsom were never more than a point or two behind, until the last few heads.' The next challengers on the list are A. Parsons (Ponsonby) and J. J. Toy (Ellerslie). The Denison Pins gave one of the closest games on Saturday that has ever been piaved. for thev tied at 4 all, 5 all, 8 ail. if all, 14 all" and 19 all, so the .trophies remain at Ponsonby. As it happened, however, none were so surprised as the winners, for Hillsboro' were one up at the 20th, and the last opened decidedly in their favour. Farland put his first bowl on the jack, Gregory another alongside it and Thompson a "third, the Ponsonby cracks, being unable to save it this time. However, Letham proved equal to the situation, and rubbed in for shot with his last bowl for a tie. Following the usual procedure of playing until the opening of' either the challengers' or the holders'-club, it looks if two more matches will be played this vear, if the weather is fine. Next Saturdav Mount Albert Nvillj challenge with J. Thomas as skip, and the follow - ing week H. C. Clarke (Carlton). Something went wrong over the Jorrlan pins on Saturday and the Hillsboro' holders waited in vrin for the visitors expected from Mount TYeHington. Probably they had a puncture'and had to stop half-way. Next Saturday s challenge is from F. Thursby, Wallcock. A. -James, C. H. Bridge (Te Papapa).

PRESS V. CARLTON.

CLUB TEAMS ROMP fIOME

The annual match between representatives Press -and Printers of Auckland and members of the Carlton Club was held on Saturday on Carlton green, under perfect weather conditions. The greens, despite recent heavy rains, were in capital condition, and the running was perfect. Prior to commencing play the president (Mr. Arnold Barter) conveyed a hearty welcome to the visitors, but before doing so made feeling reference to the loss the club had sustained through the death of Mr. Robert Millar, whose genial presence, he said, would be greatly missed by all bowlers, in common with the rest of the community. At his request the bowlers stood with uncovered heads in silence for a brief period out of respect to tiie deceased. There was a large attendance, and the visitors put in ten rinks, which were 'opposed by an equal number of Carlton i players. There were some skilful exponents amongst the Press and Printers, but the games had not progressed long before the quality of the Carlton men commenced to tell a tale, and when the games had concluded it was found that the visitors nad obtained -but three wins against seven losses. Results wfre as follow, the Press and Printers' names being given first:
