TWO HIGHWAYS BOARDS?
DESIRE IN SOUTH ISLAND, j MOTOR UNION'S AGITATION. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRIST CHURCH, Sundav. The South Island Alotor Union carried the following resolution:—"That owing to the necessity for the Highways Board having a closer knowledge of local district conditions and a better understanding of local district problems than is possible at present, the time is ripe for the establishment of separate boards for the North and South Islands." It was generally agreed by delegates that if the South Island could not get a board of its own at least South Island motorists should get an extra representative on the present board. It was decided to prepare a questionnaire for Parliamentary candidates on the subject. Referring to the Highways Board and petrol tax, the president of the Motor Uftion, Mr. A. E. Ansell, said they had had a big fight over the petrol tax, but the Prime Minister had promised that the tax would be allocated in proportion to the number of vehicles in each island.
