PROTECTION OF ANIMALS.
ANISIAL WELFARE WEEK.
That the duties of an inspector for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals are varied was evidenced by the report presented to te Executive Committee at the monthly meeting held last week. Birds, fowls, ducks, cats, dogs, calves, cows, pigs, sheep, bulls and horses were included in the list of complaints which the inspector had investigated during the preceding month. Altogether twenty cases of cruetly, caused by neglect and ignorance, had been effectively dealt with. He had been called upon to rescue a horse from the harbour, which was done with the aid of a constable after about an hour's hard work. The "bobby calf" traffic is receiving close attention,«and the committee much appreciates the help of the railway officials in their action of posting notices at all stations impressing the observance of regulations dealing with the trucking of under five days old calves and the overcrowding of trucks. Preparations for Animal Welfare Week (at tha end of October) are well in hand, and it is hoped to make the week a great success. The committee has in view a mass meeting of children in the Town Hall on Animal Welfare Sunday, with appropriate sw.dresses and suitable hymns. Close on two hundred ministers and principals of Sunday schools and instiutions had been circularised, asking their co-operation in this important movement, but the response was very disappointing, and the committee had no option but to reluctantly abandon the idea for this Year.
