A FAMOUS LONDON LANE.
Christ Church, in Newgate Street, London, formerly belonged to the Grey I? riars, whose monastery it served. The original church, destroyed in the Great ° n £ ° f the most magnificent in London. Begun in 1301, it was not "til 1327. Within its walls were interred four queens, four duchesses, four countesses, and many dukes earls, barons and knights; in all 663 persons of quality." Portions of the marble floor of this earlier monsterv church still survive, and in places the effects of the conflagration on the marble can be plainly seen. The famous "Spital Sermon" preached at Christ Church on the second Wednesday after Easter is attended by the Lord Mayor in state in accordance with ancient custom.
