APPEAL TO EMPLOYERS.
UNEMPLOYED APPRENTICES. EFFORTS TO ARRANGE TRANSFERS
The possibility of securing transfers for boys who had been dismissed from several garages in the city because of the proprietors going into voluntary liquidation was considered at a meeting of the motor mechanics' apprenticeship committee vesterdav.
Discussing the question this morning. Mr. R. F. Barter, union secretary, said the committee had found it very difficult to deal witn the cases that had come before it owing to so many boys leaving technical and primary schools desiring to b? apprenticed, and the general attitude oi employers in taking on boys who had no previous experience. It had been decided to appeal to employers for assistance in obtaining work for the apprentices who had been thrown out of employment through no fault of their awn. Eight new contracts were approved, but it was the intention of the committee to attend to the eases of the unfortunate apprentices before further contracts were dealt with. With this proposal in view, he invited apprentices in the industry who were unemployed to interview him in order that their future welfare might be considered.
