SUBSIDISING IMPORTATIONS OF STALLIONS.

In order to encourage the breeding of draught horses in West Australia, the Government has decided to import stallions by giving them a pound for pound subsidy. In making this announcement, the Minister for Agriculture said that the Department of Agricultuie would work in conjunction with the Royai Agricultural Society in trying to stimulate the horse-breeding industry. A sum of £4000 yearly would be allotted by the Government for subsidies, and the maximum grant towards the purchase of any one animal would he £2000. Regulations were being drawn up under which the subsidy would be granted. One of the provisions would be that a stallion would bj available to the settlers in the district in which it was located, and at a fee to be fixed. In order to safeguard the Government's money, it would be insisted that every stallion imported should be sound and eligible to be registered in the stud book, and that the animal must not be sold within a specified time.

The scheme is strongly approved by the Commonwealth Clydesdale Horse Society, and is recommended for adoption in other States.
